The first church of St. Peters was built on the site of his tomb and consecrated in 326. The breathtaking dome and surrounding buildings that now dominate the Roman skyline was started at the begriming of the 1500s and took a century and a half to complete, testament to the detail and intricacy of this world famous structure. Together the Vatican Museum and Basilica form one of the most famous tourist attractions the world offers popular amongst Catholics and non-Catholics alike!
Within ten minutes walk of the Domus Betti, one arrives at the Castel St Angelo one of the most interesting and historically rich buildings in the city. Crossing the river will take you into the medieval heart of the city with it's stunning Palazzi and Piazzas. This area is littered with restaurants, bars and boutiques that fill the winding streets and alleyways that connect famous attractions like the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and Piazza del Popolo.
If you stay on the same bank of the Tiber, and twenty minute walk down the riverbank brings you to the particular and beautiful area of Trastevere, the most popular romantic area of the city. With it's quality restaurants and cocktail bars, this buzzing, vibrant area will never leave you short of options for entertainment, and also boasts some of the less well known, yet most fascinating attractions of the city like St Maria in Trastevere with its intricate byzantine mosaics.
